Moorings Park was recently certified as a Naples Green Business by the City of Naples. The award was presented to Moorings Park for their commitment to our environment through waste reduction and conservation of water and energy on their 83-acre campus.
Moorings Park has incorporated environmentally conscious practices into their everyday operations. Samples of these efforts can be found in all aspects of the senior-living campus. In each of the three kitchens on-site conservation examples include: a new LEED certified hood system that utilizes less energy; installation of switches to all equipment; timers on lights in offices and lower use areas; reusing of water for cooking vegetables, seafood, shellfish into broths, sauces, and soups; all paper, bottles, cardboard, cans are recycled, filling three, eight yard recycling containers twice a week; purchasing concentrated cleaners, 97% phosphate free; and bio-bacteria system for the grease traps.
In the new construction and existing apartment refurbishments, light-emitting diode (LED) technology is being implemented and throughout campus, lights have been changed to compact fluorescent light bulbs from higher using incandescent lighting in existing buildings and LED lighting is being incorporated extensively in newer buildings under construction. These newer residences will also be LEED “Green Homes” certified when they are completed in the fall of 2012. The street lighting will incorporate LED fixtures going forward and a program has been initiated to retrofit existing street lighting with the super-efficient LED technology.
In addition to the deployment of conservative design principles the residents at Moorings Park have spear-headed a green committee. The committee meets monthly to discuss the various ways to reduce, recycle and reuse. These residents have taken ownership of environmental issues on campus and are continuing to research new ways for preservation.
“Using environmentally friendly technologies in our construction designs, food services, lighting deployment and solid waste management are examples of Moorings Park’s commitment toward environmental preservation,” said Dan Lavender, CEO and President of Moorings Park. “Our residents have organized themselves and done a great job of learning about and communicating simple things they can do to make significant reductions in our environmental footprint.”
Moorings Park is one of twenty-five businesses to achieve a Green Business Certification from the City of Naples in recognition of these environmental practices. The City of Naples Green Business Certification program is a grant-funded program supported by the State of Florida and Department of Energy. This award proudly joins various Audubon Society Project Awards and the Neighborhood for Nature Award for Moorings Park’s standing commitment of environmental stewardship.
