How To Hydrate With Food

Written by Moorings Park Communities | Jan 11, 2021 2:15:00 PM

Hydration is important, especially in warm states like Florida. Did you know that you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day in order to stay hydrated?

But that’s just the rule of thumb. How much you actually need varies depending on how much you exercise, how hot it is, and if you are generally healthy. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average man needs 15.5 cups of water a day, and the average woman needs 11.5 cups. This may seem like a lot but remember, around 20% of that can come from the foods you eat.

Some foods have more hydration benefits than others, so here are a few that will help you stay hydrated throughout the day, as well as with providing many other health benefits.

1. Spinach

This vegetable is nearly 100% water and packs a ton of vitamin C in just a few bites. It's a good addition to any sandwich, and easily condenses in a container for a salad. Retirees and working folks alike will find it a good addition to a balanced meal.

2. Lettuce

Lettuce is a classic food to be included in many common snacks and meals like salads and sandwiches. A cup of lettuce will give you a quarter cup of water while also providing a large dose of vitamin K and A, both of which are important for healthy skin and bones.

3. Oranges

The Sunshine State’s favorite fruit is actually 88% water and one orange is the equivalent of a half cup of water. It’s also a good source of fiber and potassium for your bones.

Oranges are highly portable—since they come ‘prepackaged’ in their tough natural skin—which means they are a great item to pack on a hike or when you are out and about running errands.

4. Watermelon

Watermelon, as the name suggests, is in large part water and contains about a half  cup of water for every cup of fruit. Additional benefits include a helping of magnesium and vitamin A.

There are small watermelons that can easily fit into a backpack, but since they need to be cut, you may find it easier to cut them at home and package them as a snack.

5. Plain Yogurt

Plain yogurt is 88% water and packs in many other nutrients along the way. You can also add to the nutrient value and the water value by adding a dollop of fruit, nuts, or other additions.
