Barre Basics: Setting the Bar for Your Strength

Written by Moorings Park Communities | Oct 18, 2021 2:00:00 PM

Everyone is familiar with the grace and beauty of ballet. Though, you don’t have to be a pro to benefit from the slow movements this art form boasts. Barre fitness classes have been on the rise due to the integration of dance and the control each movement requires, offering a new workout regime for those who like to keep their fitness routines interesting.

Is your interest piqued? Let’s find out if this studio-set workout is right for you.

What is Barre?

Barre classes are ballet-inspired fitness classes using the barre in a dance studio. This type of class involves a great deal of stretching and lengthening of your limbs, though nearly every part of your body is of use. Your arms, legs, glutes and core all benefit from barre thanks to the slow movements and continuous strength it welcomes.

While this is a low-impact activity great for any demographic, keep in mind that proper flexibility and strength are necessary. Though, as with any workout or fitness routine, you must do what is right for your body; always feel free to modify movements.

Barre Basics at Moorings Park at Grey Oaks

Whether you’re looking to spice up your fitness routine or are simply looking for a good time with fun music and camaraderie, look no further. Moorings Park at Grey Oaks offers a Barre Basics class, taught by one of our experienced Exercise Specialists, Leana Giron.

This advanced fitness class is centered around the barre with slow and controlled movements to increase the muscles’ time under tension to improve muscular endurance utilizing the full bodyweight to increase overall muscular strength. Each exercise is chosen to engage the core muscles to keep you upright, improving balance and coordination. It begins at the barre for a ballet-inspired strength warm-up, moving on to across-the-floor exercises to challenge coordination, and finishing off with stretches at the barre to improve flexibility.

“There are so many aspects of dance in this class that are beneficial for our residents, focusing especially on posture and core strength, and coordination and agility. In my opinion, this is exactly the kind of class that will keep our members mobile, independent, and aging successfully,” says Giron.

Though, of course, you do not have to be a “dancer” to participate. And, you can leave the tutu and ballet slippers at home; your regular workout attire will do.

Barre Basics is just one of the many fitness classes offered at Moorings Park’s Communities; others include chair yoga, Aqua Power, Core Pilates, Tai Chi, and more. Members may also visit any of our fitness centers to work with one of our many certified personal trainers to curate a fully customized workout plan.
